Best of all, there are few places left that can be said to represent the last frontier of tourism. Whether you're an expat or a pilgrim, Saudi Arabia is one of them. Saudi Arabia officially known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the largest Arab state in Western Asia by land area (approximately 2,150,000 km2 (830,000 sq mi)), constituting the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula, and the second-largest geographically in the Arab world. It is bordered by Jordan and Iraq to the north, Kuwait to the northeast, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to the east, Oman to the southeast, and Yemen in the south. It is the only nation with both a Red Sea coast and a Persian Gulf coast, and most of its terrain consists of arid inhospitable desert or barren landforms. The area of modern-day Saudi Arabia formerly consisted of four distinct regions: Hejaz, Najd, and parts of Eastern Arabia (Al-Ahsa) and Southern Arabia ('Asir).[10] The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 by Ibn Saud. He united the four regions into a single state through a series of conquests beginning in 1902 with the capture of Riyadh, the ancestral home of his family, the House of Saud. The country has since been an absolute monarchy governed along Islamic lines. Wahhabi Islam has been called "the predominant feature of Saudi culture".[11][12] Saudi Arabia is sometimes called "the Land of the Two Holy Mosques" in reference to Al-Masjid al-Haram (in Mecca), and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (in Medina), the two holiest places in Islam. The Kingdom has a total population of 28.7 million, of which 20 million are Saudi nationals and 8 million are foreigners. Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil producer and largest exporter, and controls the world's second largest hydrocarbon reserves. Backed by its fossil fuels, the kingdom is categorized as a high income economy with a high Human Development Index and is the only Arab country to be part of the G-20 major economies

In addition, there is a military intelligence service, the General Intelligence Presidency (GIP). The Saudi Arabian National Guard is not a reserve but a fully operational front-line force, and originated out of Abdul Aziz’s tribal military-religious force, the Ikhwan. Its modern existence, however, is attributable to it being effectively Abdullah’s private army since the 1960s and, unlike the rest of the armed forces, is independent of the Ministry of Defense. The SANG has been a counterbalance to the Sudairi faction in the royal family; Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, the king, is one of the so-called "Sudairi Seven" and controls the remainder of the armed forces. The regime has been an absolute monarchy since its inception. It describes itself as being Islamic and is highly influenced by Wahhabism.[12] Saudi Arabia is sometimes called "the Land of the Two Holy Mosques" in reference to Al-Masjid al-Haram (in Mecca), and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (in Medina), the two holiest places in Islam. Saudi Arabia has the world's 2nd largest oil reserves, which are concentrated largely in the Eastern Province.[13][14] Oil accounts for more than 95% of exports and 70% of government revenue, although the share of the non-oil economy has been growing recently. This has facilitated the transformation of an underdeveloped desert kingdom into one of the world's wealthiest nations. Vast oil revenues have permitted rapid modernisation, such as the creation of a welfare state.[15] It has also the world's sixth largest natural gas reserves. Saudi Arabia - CBSE Class V Social Science Lesson - Check out this lesson from Soma Mukhopadhyay for SuccessCDs Education About the Lesson The Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world. It lies between the Red Sea on the west and the Persian Gulf on the east. CAPITAL CITY - RIYADH LAND of SAUDI ARABIA It is a high rocky plateau covered by a vast desert. The desert is covered with small hills of sand called sand dunes. Strong winds and dust storms keep blowing and shifting these sand dunes from one place to another. There are no lakes or rivers in this land. But at some places in the desert, underground water comes to the surface forming fertile areas called oasis. The Al-Ahsa is the largest oasis in Saudi Arabia. Their main occupation is rearing cattle . They keep on moving from place to place in search of pastures for their flocks of goats, sheep and camel. Climate : The Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle of Saudi Arabia. The climate is thus hot and dry with very little rain fall. The nights are cool, as the sand in the desert cools down quickly at night. During winter, the nights are very cold. Vegetation Date palms and some crops such as wheat and barley are grown in the oasis region. People Most men and boys wear the traditional loose fitting white robes called Thobe. Their heads are covered with a white cloth, held in place by a ring. Women must cover their head and body in the traditional Abaya, a black dress that only leaves their eyes exposed, when they go out. They are not allowed to drive cars.
